Beyond the Diagnosis Integrating Mental Health into Everyday Home Care Practice
This session is designed for healthcare professionals who want to move beyond simply completing the task of care and become more skilled at understanding the person, family, and emotional experience behind the diagnosis.

Beyond the Diagnosis: Integrating Mental Health into Everyday Home Care Practice explores the often-unseen connection between emotional well-being, physical health, and the everyday care provided in the home. Home care professionals are in a unique position to notice subtle shifts in mood, behavior, family dynamics, coping, and overall functioning, sometimes long before a mental health concern becomes a crisis.

Through an engaging and practical Washington Wellness Institute approach, participants will learn how to recognize early signs of depression, anxiety, trauma responses, isolation, substance misuse, caregiver burnout, and behavioral health decline. The session will also introduce trauma-informed communication, de-escalation strategies, supportive ways to engage families, and tools for responding to distress while preserving dignity and trust.

Just as importantly, the presentation will address the emotional impact of caregiving on healthcare professionals themselves, including compassion fatigue, secondary traumatic stress, and the importance of team resilience. Participants will leave with immediately usable strategies to strengthen their confidence, communication, awareness, and ability to provide whole-person care.
